Hot spots are a nasty condition characterized by firm, circular, raised ulcerated skin lesions caused by a dog’s repeated licking or gnawing at a given area. While not only painful, they pose the risk of becoming infected. Usually, an allergic reaction or other irritant is to blame, as the dog attempts to soothe the irritated skin, inadvertently creating the hot spot and starting a vicious cycle. The behavior becomes compulsive and is difficult to stop. These spots can appear suddenly and without warning, becoming larger in a matter of hours.

This fungal infection sometimes presents as discolored skin excreting a dark or yellow discharge. The affected area is visibly irritated and itchy. In dogs, yeast infections usually occur between the paws or inside the ears — dark crevices where yeast thrives.

This highly contagious fungus usually affects young puppies. It presents as scaly, inflamed circular bald patches with a lesion in the middle. Ringworm is often found on the head, paws, ears, and forelegs.

Shedding is normal for most dogs, but excessive shedding can sometimes be cause for concern. Stress, poor diet, or an actual illness may be behind your dogs abnormal hair loss.

Certain grooming products may cause allergic reactions in cats with sensitivities. Pollen, mold, fleabites, and other environmental irritants can cause dermatitis as well. The most common symptom that indicates allergic dermatitis is a constant scratching of the head or gnawing at the paws or base of the tail.

Fleas are commonly found on the coats of both dogs and cats. Signs of a flea infection are constant scratching, crusty lesions on the skin, and thinning hair. Sometimes, fleas even cause allergic reactions which can lead to other complications if not treated promptly.
