Horse Conditons Treated

Horses are susceptible to skin conditions no matter the time of year. Skin disorders in horses can be caused by a variety of factors including: bacteria, viruses, fungi, or other environmental irritants such as insect bites. If a horse’s skin is infected with a disorder, this can cause a variety of other issues due to its compromised immune system.

All disorders should be treated as soon as possible.

Rain Rot

This bacterial infection can present in a number of ways. From small raised bumps to unsightly open wounds, this infection found anywhere that rain tends to run off a horse — including the shoulders, hindquarters, and even the lower legs and face. Over time, the crust that forms over these wounds peels off, leaving bald spots.

Prevention

Some horses are more prone to contracting rain rot than others, including horses with compromised immune systems and horses that spend a lot of time in cool, dark, rainy places. Rain rot occurs when a horse’s fur remains damp for long periods of time

Rain rot can be prevented in a number of ways

  • Quality grains and hay
  • Proper grooming
  • Horses that spend most of their time outside should be brought inside to dry often
  • Use of well-fitting saddles to prevent irritation
  • Hosing a horse down after a workout

**If a skin condition does not resolve itself in two to three days, call your veterinarian**

Girth Itch

This fungal infection can usually be identified behind a horse’s elbow. Without treatment, the condition can spread and cause discomfort and pain. Fungal spores can enter a horse through irritated open skin under the girth, and once under the broken skin, have free reign to multiply inside. Usually, this condition affects horses with compromised immune systems, which can make girth itch a chronic issue for some.

Prevention

Horses with lighter skin are more susceptible to girth itch. Their more sensitive skin is prone to being nicked or cut much easier, allowing for the constant threat of infection. The fungus which causes girth itch is commonly found in mud, so it is best for horses with white legs to avoid such areas.

Treatment

Apply Behr Pet Essentials Skin Treatment to the affected area several times daily.

While not usually painful, it’s still itchy!

“This stuff is nothing short of amazing. My 18 pound ragdoll cat occasionally gets chin acne. I know, who knew? There is no real reason that I can ascertain for his occasional issues, but when he gets them he scratches them mercilessly. I had been putting a prescription steroid on them, but I don’t like to use it where he could potentially lick it off. I purchased this after doing a search on organic ointments for Cat acne. I am so thankful that I found it.”

“I came across this stuff and the reviews were great. So I bought it. I have been applying it once a day and Midnight’s hair is starting to grown back in! Im SO happy. This product is expensive for the size but it works!”

“My dog has been battling scabby and inflamed hot spots for months on her belly, underarms and groin area. I have tried so many topical treatments, vitamin supplements and cytopoint injections- nothing was working. She was so uncomfortable and I couldn’t figure out what to do. I tried this on a whim and it cleared every single hot spot in THREE DAYS. I am amazed and thankful!!”

“A lot smaller than I thought but truly worked miracles for my cat who was constantly itching to the point he had scabs everywhere. At first I assumed it was fleas so I tried all the standard flea treatments but it got worse. I rubbed this into his hotspots 2 times a day and a week later he was a totally different cat. He actually reaches out for the jar of lotion now as if he knew it helped him.”
